As Northside says Brooklyn is where it's at. What began in 2009 as a way of putting a spotlight on local music has grown into one of America's premier music festivals. Northside Music gives a stage to the artists you need to know about. Northside is a showcase of the past, present and future incarnations of this so-called “Brooklyn sound” that has in many ways come to define independent music in the new millennium–a snapshot of its current state, with bands that are emerging, those next in line, and those that have paved the way, all rubbing elbows in Williamsburg and Greenpoint for four days in June.
In its 10th year Budapest based band Irie Maffia mixes boldly reggae, hip-hop, rock, funk and electronica always with an urban and world music twist. Irie Maffia was formed in 2005 and grew quickly into one of the most popular concert bands in Hungary. In the past few years the “maffia” played on every main stage of the Hungarian festival scene, and as a sound system (DJ/MC) they have performed in all major clubs in Hungary.

We couldn't have thought of a more exciting group to represent our urban present than Budapest-based “It-band” Irie Maffia. Irie Maffia was formed in 2005 and grew quickly into one of the most popular concert bands in Hungary. In the past few years the “maffia” have played on every major stage of the Hungarian festival scene, and as a sound system (DJ/MC) they have performed in all major clubs in Hungary. Shortly after their first successes in Hungary the band has started to build its international carrier with shows in major European cities, they have thrown gigs in Italy, the Netherlands, France, Germany, the UK and Austria just to name a few. Their first step was the Rototom Sunsplash in Italy 2007, the most important reggae-contest of Europe. The band was invited to Rovereto (Italy) to celebrate the 90th anniversary of the end of World War I along with the best bands from the participating countries.
The band played in the Netherlands, at My City Amsterdam festival, at the Hungarian Cultural Institute and in various clubs in Paris, France and also at festivals in Germany (Berlin), England (London, Winchester), Austria (Wien), Slovakia (Bratislava) and Serbia. They also have an annual tour in Transylvania. Irie Maffia has just turned 10, and celebrated their birthday with a massive party in Budapest. We are proud and glad that the band starts its second decade with their American tour, powered by the Balassi Institute - Hungarian Cultural Center in New York. After the tour, Maffia will fly back to Hungary and take the main stage at all the major festivals, like VOLT, Balaton Sound and Sziget, the Island of Freedom in the heart of Budapest. The Maffia has just released the anthem of Sziget 2015, Easy as One Two Three.
Check out the folowwing links and the videos below for a taste of the sound of the Maffia.
