SCULPTORS '56

SCULPTORS | EXHIBITION
Consulate General of Hungary | 223 East 52nd Street
From October 22, 2015 on show at the Breuer Hall of the Consulate General of Hungary

With cooperation from guest curator András Böröcz, a major figure on the contemporary experimental arts scene in Brooklyn and Hungary alike, we present a probe into the possibilities of thinking of the 1956 anti-Soviet uprising in Budapest and the countryside not as a chapter of national and international histories, but as an example of revolutionary spirit and inspiration. Including surrealist art from József Jakovits created in the days of the revolution as well as reflections by contemporary artists around the torn down statue of Stalin, the exhibition captures the eruption of human energy that makes a revolution as well as today's ironic dissections of the cult of personality that seeks to stifle the revolutionary spirit. The exhibition will complement the commemoration of the 1956 revolution held at the Consulate General, as well as being open to visitors by appointment.
