András Márton presents his take on great personalities, everyday people and celebrities. Stories, gags and thoughts from the borderlands of theater and diplomacy.
András Márton is not just an actor and stage director with a distinguished career, but also a diplomat who was posted to both Coasts of the United States and also worked as a carpenter in Finland, a distinguished translator of plays and theoretical literature, a professor of theater and drama holding a doctorate, and a communications consultant.
As could be expected, he has encountered a great number of colorful personalities in his life, experienced unusual situations and since his wry sense of humor has never abandoned him, it was only natural to present his experiences in an entertaining fashion, a sort of intellectual stand-up that runs as a full show - no doubt due to the wealth of raw material.
The performance draws chiefly on the six years spent in Los Angeles as consul general. He met several presidents, other important political personalities, but also regular Americans, Hungarian Americans, celebrities and billionaires - people from all walks of life. He brings these meetings to life with the sure touch of a seasoned theater professional, permitting us unique peeks into life in the US during the last decade of the 20th century.
What, in the end, is intellectual stand-up? As usual for the genre, the first person narrator and author is present on stage, and is often the suffering protagonist of the quirky stories told - but with a measure of reflection which does not take away any bit from the jokes.
