Balassi Institute proudly presents Hungary to Brooklyn! - a concert by Romano Drom, in partnership with the World Music Institute and the Trust for Mutual Understanding in New York.
Members of Romano Drom are amongst the most prominent representatives of contemporary Roma music. Since its foundation in 1999, the Band has toured the world over, including countries as diverse as Canada, South Korea, Norway and Ukraine. Romano Drom 's unique sound and evident passion has conquered audiences in every festival, theater and club they have played, making them one of the most sought after acts on the burgeoning Roma world music scene.
The name of the band means "The Gypsy´s Road", which finds musical expression in the band's presentation of original RomVlach language songs with modern scoring. Original compositions by the band are deeply rooted in ancient RomVlach music, they reach a wider audience by integrating the authentic melodies with influences from wold music and other contemporary sources of inspiration.
Antal Kovács, founder and composer of Romano Drom, combines the centuries-old musical culture native to East Central Europe with Catalan rumba, Arabic, Balkan and even pop music rhythms. His arrangements are for guitar, bass/double bass, as well as the traditional pot and spoon which lend the band a unique and captivating sound.
The band has published five albums with domestic and European distribution, including a remix album that is unique within the genre. The latest album of of this ground breaking and innovative world music ensemble will be hitting stores in 2014, so watch out for a preview of new songs at the following shows:
