Magos

Balassi Institute New York is proud to sponsor the North American tour of the noted Hungarian folk ensemble, Magos. This spring the band is touring the United States stopping by in New York on May 5 before their closing concert in Washington D.C. on May 6.
The NYC concert will take place at the Saint Stephen of Hungary parish church at 414 East 82nd Street, between 1st and York. A dance learning workshop will kick of the evening at 6pm, followed by the concert at 7pm and a long folk dance party lasting until midnight. The USD 15 cover charge to the event covers all parts of the evening. No RSVP necessary, but you may reserves places by emailing This email address is being protected from spambots. The band was formed in 2008, and plays mainly music originating from Transylvania (specifically the regions of Kalotaszeg, Mezőség, Székelyföld) and Hungary. They are inspired by the Hungarian folk traditions but also possess a distinct sound of their own. Performances are made up of carefully selected surveys of regions and their traditions, with the musicians adapting to the specificities of the tradition they are tapping into. Artistry and authenticity thus find their place in the concerts and present the audience with a message from small and almost forgotten villages with exceptional expressivity.
Magos is one of the bands that still practice the art of fieldwork to collect new material, following in the footsteps of Béla Bartók and Zoltán Kodály. Band members undertake regular trips to various regions of the country and Transylvania, visiting bearers of tradition that could easily become extinct in the coming decades. Theirs is truly a message in a bottle that has floated across the ocean, reporting of one of the most complex folk musical microcosmos in the world: Hungarian folk music.
